The Truth About Aging and Pain…

“You won’t be able to do that without being sore the next day when you get to be my age.”

“When you’re as old as I am, your knees will ache too.”

I hear things like this all the time and it’s usually from people that are in their 40s or 50s! Today this is not very old anymore, for most it is the halfway point of their lives and they just expect the second half to be filled with constant aches and pains.

Age doesn’t mean that you have to just accept a life with a sore back or achey knees. This is a sign that something is wrong. Of course our body’s aren’t going to be the same at the age of 20 as they are at the age of 50. Just like we get wrinkles on our skin, we also get wrinkles on the inside of our body’s as well.

It will take more time to warm up before you exercise. Your muscles will require a little more care to stay mobile. Your heart will take a little longer to ramp up your heart rate. But this doesn’t mean a life sentence of pain. A healthy diet and regular exercise can greatly slow down or reverse these age related changes.

Don’t expect to be doing exactly what you were doing at age 25, but you can probably do damn near it while being pain free. Physical therapy can help eliminate daily aches and pains, so that you can continue the activities you enjoy and keep up with your kids or grandkids.

Running or lifting heavy aren’t just a young man’s game. Do you enjoy golf, tennis, or just walking. A physical therapist can help you maintain healthy muscles and joints to keep doing these activities without fear of “throwing out your back” and being sore for three days straight.
